On July 18, 2006 OPM releases their third full-length album appropriately titled California Poppy on the highly influential underground label Suburban Noize Records.
California Poppy will be OPM's third full-length album and is the most raw and live sounding of the three. The album was produced by john e. and Geoff at MNO, OPM's studio located in the heart of Hollywood . They produced this record in a more traditional style (drums, bass, guitars, keys and vocals) compared to their last two records, which primarily started as programmed beats and then evolved into songs.
OPM's first album Menace to Sobriety, was released by Atlantic records. It was this album that dawned the international skateboarder's anthem, "Heaven is a Halfpipe." The song reached the #1 most requested on LA's KROQ and #1 Nationwide Top Phones. It also charted at #3 in the UK and remained in the Top 5 for over two months. "Heaven is a Halfpipe" won the highly acclaimed Kerrang "Single of the Year" award. Following this, the popular For Them Asses was released on Suburban Noize Records further defining their unique style with classic tracks like "Rollin", Perfect Day" and "Luffly".
California Poppy will be OPM's second full-length record for Suburban Noize. john e. explains why Suburban Noize Records works so well for OPM. "We really love the creative freedom we have by being with Suburban Noize. Our goal is to create music that people enjoy, including ourselves. At Suburban Noize, we have total creative independence. Also, there is a community among the artists as opposed to the major label hierarchy between bands. They allow artist development to happen naturally by taking the time to plant seeds and grow roots."
OPM has sold over one million units around the world.
California Poppy is a record that takes OPM back to their roots. Rooted in California, the band takes pride in what has influenced their lifestyle and music. Local artists like Sublime, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, No Doubt and NWA have had a huge impact on their sound. In the spirit of the Beach Boys, OPM truly defines the So Cal lifestyle that people all around the world seem to be fascinated with. California Poppy, like Menace to Sobriety and For them Asses, is the kind of record you can put on at your backyard BBQ and play from top to bottom. A culmination of reggae rhythms, hip-hop beats and punk rock attitude defines the California lifestyle. The songs tend to find the brighter side of things giving an uplifting perspective on life. The days are full of drinking, drugs, beautiful girls, the beach, surf and fun in the sun. But at the same time you feel the reality of life and personal struggle. Living in California is not always as glamorous as television shows lie the "O.C. and " Beverly Hills 90210" suggest.
It is the collective belief of OPM that the greatest accomplishment of any artist is to convey an emotion in such a profound way that the listener is somehow affected. The more complicated the emotion, the more difficult it is to convey. The most challenging being love or desire because it requires an artist to expose himself fully and to discuss personal feelings. Masters of this art include Bob Marley and John Lennon. California Poppy contains such songs as "Eternity" "Love Don't" and "Desire" beautifully achieving this challenge with stunning success. "Classy Lady" is a somehow soulful trip into the strip club and feeling as though you are falling in love with a dancer. The very dark and deep track "Leave 'em For Dead" deals with politics and humanity. "Lion's Pride" faces the "war on drugs". With so many of their generation being locked up for growing and smoking an herb, OPM strikes back with the lyric "I've committed no crime". "Somewhere Further Than the Valley" is a song about being locked in the city and the pressure starting to weigh you down, a beautiful daydream of an existing nirvana and how to find it in traditional OPM style.
