“An Unusual Love Story” David+Lisa is an intense fairy-tale-of-sorts that tells the story of two people who meet in a mental institution.
This production promises to be as enlightening as it is entertaining complete with original music by Kris Hill and Ryan Breen, original choreography by Lisa Starry, and the exclusive physical narrative of this peculiar love story ... a story that suits the company's idiosyncratic brand of performance very well.
Artistic director, Lisa Starry was first attracted to this story as she and her high school sweetheart husband, David Starry, share the names of the protagonists. “I first discovered the film when I was in college,” explains Starry. “I thought it was wonderful that there would be a story out there named after us. Obviously, it was not even close to our own story, but I identified with the characters instantly, as damaged and misunderstood as they were.”
Phoenix-based musicians, Kris Hill (Drunken Immortals, Calo Flamenco) and Ryan Breen (Back Ted N-Ted) will co-compose original musical scores. They intend to devise a moody blend of instrumentals appropriate to the subject matter. (The two recently teamed on Scorpius' Fantasy...Inspired by Michael Parkes, which premiered March 2007). Other collaborating artists will include set designer, David Castellano; lighting designer, Mike Eddy; and of course, the versatile Scorpius dancers. Furthermore, The Little Theatre will be transformed into a hospital ward. The traditional black box space altered so drastically that it alone will be worth the price of admission.
